5 Things You Can Do Yourself To Keep Your Motorcycle Tidy

Maintaining your motorcycle doesn’t have to be complicated.
There are many tasks that you can easily do yourself, even if you are not an expert mechanic.

Taking care of your motorcycle not only saves you money, but also helps you get to know your "adventure companion" better.

Here are 5 simple things you can do yourself to keep your bike in tip-top shape.

1. Oil change

"How to change the engine oil of the motorcycle?" you will surely have searched for it at least once, here is a simple and fast way! Whether you have a KTM, a Honda or a Yamaha the procedure is almost always the same
Changing your oil is one of the easiest jobs to do and one of the most important for the health of your engine.
Oil lubricates engine parts, preventing wear.
Follow the instructions in your motorcycle manual to find out how often to do this and remember to dispose of used oil at collection centers.

How to do :

  • Warm up the engine for a few minutes.
  • Remove the oil drain plug and allow the oil to drain into a container.
  • Replace the oil filter.
  • Replace the cap and fill the engine with new oil, checking the level with the dipstick or the porthole, remember that the manual gives the exact quantity to put in.

2. Check the brakes

Braking safely is essential, and checking your brakes is an operation you cannot ignore. Check your brake pads and brake fluid level often.

How to do :

  • Check the thickness of the pads: if they are too thin, it's time to change them.
  • Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir. If it is below the minimum level, add the recommended fluid.

3. Cleaning and lubricating the chain

A well-lubricated chain makes a big difference in the performance of your bike. Clean it regularly and apply the right lubricant to avoid wear and tear.

How to do :

  • Raise the rear wheel with a jack stand (if you have one).
  • Use a specific chain cleaning spray and a brush to remove dirt.
  • Apply chain lube and let dry before riding.

4. Check tire pressure

Tyres with the right pressure allow you to have maximum control of the motorbike and extend the life of the tyres.
Once a week, check your blood pressure and inflate if necessary.

How to do :

  • Use a pressure gauge to check the pressure. The correct value is indicated in the motorcycle manual.
  • If the pressure is too low, inflate the tires to the recommended level.

5. Check lights and signals

Make sure all your motorcycle lights and indicators are working properly. Burnt out bulbs are not only dangerous, they could also get you a ticket.

How to do :

  • Start the engine and check the headlights, taillights, turn signals and brake light.
  • If a bulb does not work, replace it with a new one suitable for your motorcycle model.

Conclusion :
These 5 things are just the beginning, but doing them regularly will help keep your bike safe and in tip-top condition. Taking care of your bike is an important part of being a motorcyclist, and every time you put your hands on its parts, you learn something new.
